OSWALDO VIGAS
(1923-2014)
Valencia, Venezuela
“ Oswaldo Vigas is one of the true innovators of Latin American art….He belongs among those who have contributed the most to keeping alive the natural cultural elements of his continent, which are as he himself has defined, “of pre-logic character, magic, mythological, non-rationalist” . ….Vigas has been able to make an original synthesis in his work, something personal between these preserved “natural tendencies” and the more contemporary explorations of the creators of modernism….”.
Jean Clarence Lambert, French poet and art critic
A defining moment:
The beginning
of a lifelong commitment
to art
“In the early days of my career, I had the extraordinary privilege of meeting Oswaldo Vigas and his wife, Janine. Their belief in my convincing passion marked a turning point in my life. Vigas looked me in the eye and said, “If you promise to be faithful to the arts, I will let you represent me in Miami. I don’t want to hear that one day you will be out there selling potatoes.” With those words, a deep responsibility was born, and on November 22, 1995, we signed a formal representation agreement that became the foundation of my journey in the art world.
That moment was not just the start of a contract; it was the beginning of a mission to honor the legacy of great Latin American artists and to highlight their voices across borders.
I will always be grateful for the trust Oswaldo and Janine Vigas placed in me.
Now, three decades later, collectors and enthusiasts continue to approach us about the availability of artworks by Vigas, current value, prices, and seeking guidance on how to add his pieces to their collections. That enduring interest is a testament to the strength of his legacy and the foundation he helped build for South Art Dealer.
His art continues to inspire everything South Art Dealer stands for today.”
