DOPICO-LERNER

(1943 – 2020) Havana, Cuba 

Vicente Dopico-Lerner was born in havana, cuba in 1943.

In 1974, he received his b.a. from the University of St. Thomas in Florida. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree in science and completed several courses at the Atlantic University and Florida International University and studied art at the Student League of New York in the 1970s, where he studied with Robert Motherwell, Rodolfo Abularach, and other prominent artists.

He is featured in several essays on Cuban and Latin American art and highlighted in significant publications such as “Memoria: Cuban Art of the 20th Century,” the first comprehensive publication on twentieth-century Cuban art, and the Dominican Encyclopedia of Fine Arts.

Dopico-Learner won several awards and participated in more than 150 collective exhibitions and over 50 solo exhibits. Notable shows include “Demons Inkspiration” at Kendall Art Center (2019), the contemporary Latin-American art exhibition at the Museum of Art and History in Delray Beach, FL (2000), Latin-American Painters of Today at the Museum of the Americas in San Juan, Puerto Rico (1999), and the 5th exposition of Arawak drawings at the museum of modern art in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1998). 

He achieved two of the most prestigious awards: the Cintas Foundation fellowship in New York (1976) and the Society of Fine Arts award in St. Petersburg, Florida (1979).

In 2017, Vicente Dopico-Lerner was honored to have his work included in the prestigious Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
